RANT # 1 TAXATION Why are we always concerned with how much people pay in taxes? The important figure is how much a person has left AFTER the tax is paid. That is what is always wrong with a flat tax. It is touted as the fairest tax. After all, everyone pays the same percentage. But if the tax is fifty percent - which was the highest during the Regan years - a person whose earnings are 2 million a year still has 1 million left after taxes, but a person whose full-time job only pays twenty thousand has only ten thousand left, which puts him or her below the poverty level. One million is more than ten times the median income level (for a family of four). In other words, half the wage earners in the country earn ten times less.
